The Complicit Spouse

There is a high prevalence of non-abusers knowing about the abuse but choosing to not help their child. The reasons appear to be that a high percentage of non-abusers may have been abused themselves. That can lead into part of the reason why FSA is multigenerational. If the non-abuser knows about the abuse and continues to do nothing than it is not going to matter how many laws are passed or nonprofits organized until the source of the problem is addressed. Thus, Sacred Innocence’s mission is to help aide in the healing process of a victim and to help the complicit partner understand what healthy relationships are, what their rights are, and how to protect their children.

Many complicit spouses say they fear what their abusing spouse will do to them if they confront them or leave. Many complicit spouses say they cannot leave because they lack an education or financial means to leave. Many complicit spouses say they love their spouse and don’t want to lose them by addressing the issue despite the fact their spouse molested their own children. Complicit spouses who were abused may have a sense of acceptance that sexual abuse happens in families. Many complicit spouses say it will bring shame and embarrassment to the family and people will want to know why they did not leave earlier.

At Sacred Innocence we believe that education, financial needs, love, and shame are not good enough excuses to allow sexual abuse to continue in a home. Excuses do not change the root cause but are a critical factor in continuing the multigenerational cycle of abuse. Change will come through action - individual action. Sacred Innocence is dedicated to teaching victims healthy family roles and to understand there are no reasons to rationalize the molestation of children by their own parents.

When a person has been abused for many years they can become desensitized to pain, especially other’s pain. Sacred Innocence does acknowledge the fear a victim can experience regarding the abuser’s repercussions to all family members if they have threatened to harm the child or mother for exposing them. In these cases, extreme yet careful actions must be taken. This is where the teachings of a victim’s rights will be critical in the Sacred Innocence Empowerment Program.
